A short introduction to room acoustics

چکیده

Sound waves are mechanical waves and the behaviours of fixtures inside rooms are governed by rules in physics. These fixtures are classified into three groups: reflectors, diffusers and absorbers, and the physical properties are investigated. The important parameters in determining acoustic quality of rooms are introduced. On the other hand, it is shown that limitations exist on applying these parameters. A brief introduction of solving room acoustic problems by the finite element method is made at the end.

Free-field Virtual Psychoacoustic and Hearing Impairment: Paper 775 Does learning a room’s reflections aid spatial hearing?

Sound reflections are abundantly present in everyday environments; yet, our spatial hearing abilities are usually not impaired by them. One contributor to this robustness is the adaptation to the reflections after being repeatedly exposed to the room’s reverberation. The echo threshold, the delay at which a reflection starts being separately audible as an echo, increases with repeated exposure ...

Architectural Acoustics: Towards a Benchmark in Computational Room Acoustics

In 1995, an intercomparison on room acoustics computer simulations was launched, the so-called round robin I. The object of interest was a mid-sized auditorium. That project also included a small measurement project, where sessions of impulse response measurements were carried out with several teams and instrumentation. Since that time, the variations in the results obtained by computer simulat...

Hybrid Room Impulse Response Synthesis in Digital Waveguide Mesh Based Room Acoustics Simulation

The digital waveguide mesh (DWM) and related finite difference time domain techniques offer significant promise for room acoustics simulation problems. However high resolution 3-D DWMs of large spaces remain beyond the capabilities of current desktop based computers, due to prohibitively long run-times and large memory requirements. This paper examines how hybrid room impulse response synthesis...

What do we know in room acoustics?

Room acoustics has a scientific interdisciplinary concept which will be further developed in future. During the last century, several dimensions of the overall listening impression in concert halls were identified which show a good correlation with corresponding objective measurement data. It can be summarized that the three most important factors (loudness, reverberance and spatial impression)...
